The installation process of the Mac OS X Lion is fairly straight-forward, but those who are newer to developing on OS X may not know what to expect. Well, don’t worry, we are here presenting you the step by step guidelines on how to install the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion on a separate partition.

CAUTION : The Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is only compatible with the Intel Macs from 2009 and newer, and hence, don’t attempt to install it on an earlier Mac.

Step – 1 : First, set up a partition. Now, open Disk Utility (Applications -> Disk Utility) and choose your hard drive on the left. Click “Partition” on the top set of tabs, and you’ll see a breakdown of your hard drive partitions. Now, click the “+” at the bottom, and set your partition size, format and name.

NOTE : Well, you’ll need at least 25-40 GB dedicated to Lion, more if you wish to follow Step – 2 below. Just be sure that the drive is set to the format Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Step – 2 : Well, it is the optional step. If you have set up a big enough partition, then use a program like Carbon Copy to make a backup of Snow Leopard on your new partition. In this way, you can keep your Snow Leopard programs and files in Lion, and still keep your original Snow Leopard partition. Now, open Carbon Copy -> Source Disk (Your Snow Leopard Partition) -> TargetDisk (Your empty partition). Just be sure that the drives you have selected are correct. Then, finally, click on “Done”.

Step – 3 : Now, run the OS X Lion installer. Then, open the Lion installer, and select the drive you wish to install Lion on. After that, click on “Install”, then allow the installer to do its work.

Step – 4 : Now, set up Lion. Reboot your Mac while holding “Option” to select your start-up disk. Then, select the Lion partition. Similarly the first name using Snow Leopard, set up Lion step by step. After completed, you’ll be returned to your desktop, which should look something as below;
