Well, according to a recent report by 9to5Mac, Apple has modified their App Store ranking algorithms as there were sudden changes to App Store rankings for both free and paid games and apps. Actually, the best-selling chart of App Store was previously based purely on the number of times an app was downloaded, but, now, it seems that app usage is also taken into account when iOS apps are ranked.

App Store ranking algorithm changed

The most noticeable shifts for an app was to the official “Facebook” app, that jumped straight to the first rank in the free chart after hovering between 10th and 20th for the last year, whereas, other popular apps, such as, Netflix and Pandora, also jumped up the chart after the adjustment.

Well, according to Peter Farago, the vice president of Flurry;

We’ve been noticing changes in the Top Free rankings for at least three days now,” said Peter Farago, vice president of marketing at Flurry, which serves 80,000 applications with its analytics product. “From our point of view, Apple is absolutely considering more than just downloads, which we believe is the right direction go to measure true popularity of an app.” Other pay-per-install networks tell us they’ve been detecting these changes too.

Apple started revamping their algorithms for ranking the apps in App Store, and hence, it’ll be a welcome move for the users as they can easily find out the better one among the huge list. So, what do you think on this? Just don’t forget to share your views and comments on this with us.
